Core objectives

What we set out to do

Five concrete commitments that shape every clinic, training and outreach we run.

Treatment & supplies access

Improve access to diabetes treatment and medical supplies for patients in remote and underserved communities.

Self-management education

Provide diabetes self-management education for patients and their caregivers.

Fewer complications

Reduce complications associated with Type 1 Diabetes through awareness and continuous care.

Stronger community support

Strengthen community support systems for people living with diabetes.

Self-reliance & livelihoods

Promote self-reliance and economic empowerment among diabetes patients.

Our story

Many people living with Type 1 Diabetes in Kasese District face barriers that should not still exist in 2026: long distances to healthcare facilities, poor transportation infrastructure, high travel costs, and limited access to specialists and treatment supplies.

NDI was formed to break that pattern. We are peer-led — meaning many of the people running the organisation live with diabetes themselves — and we focus on adults who have aged out of child-focused diabetes aid programmes but still need lifelong support. Today we support a growing network of over 100 Type 1 and 400 Type 2 diabetes patients across the district.

In partnership with Diabetes Empowerment International (DEI), we opened the NDI Center in August 2016. Today the centre houses a diabetes clinic, private examination room, conference & training room, community garden, and a small block of rental apartments that fund ongoing operations.

We treat every patient as a neighbour, not a number.

Equity

Quality care should not be a privilege of geography or income.

Integrity

We are accountable to patients, partners and the public.

Community empowerment

We build local capacity rather than replace it.

Accountability

Outcomes — not activities — measure our success.

Sustainability

We pair clinical care with livelihoods that outlast donor cycles.

Patient-centered care

Every plan begins and ends with the patient’s lived experience.
